  • Obituary: Captain Karl E Willigar of Whitehall Road, Parrsboro, one of the town's last sea captains from the golden days of sail, passed away at South Cumberland Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, May 6, following a lengthy illness. The late Captain Willigar was aged 72. Born in the seaport town of Parrsboro, he was a son of the late Captain Edmund and Annie Willigar. He was master of the tern schooner "Francis Parson," out of Parrsboro for several years, and during the Second World War, was master of the freighter "Kent Sweeney." For many years, he was an employee of Irving Oil Company, as captain of the vessels "Molly G" and the "Sea Conch" as well as various Irving Oil Tugboats. At one time, he was a member of the L.O.O.F., although he spent most of his life at sea. He is survived by his wife, the former Florence Kendrick, a daughter: Patricia, Mrs. Earl Gouchie, Amherst; a son: Carl, Glace Bay; a sister: Margaret, Mrs. J. H. Creech, Lakeland, Florida;and three grandchildren: Jeff, Janice and Jennifer Gouchie, Amherst. He was predeceased by a sister: Mrs. Bella Desmond, and three brothers: Dr. Wylie, Murray and Maxwell. His remains rested at Smith's Funeral Home in Parrsboro. Funeral service was held from St. George's Anglican Church on Friday, May 8, at 4 p. m. officiated by Rev. Whitley A. Trueman, assisted by Father Arthur Alexander. Hymns sung were: " The Lord is my Shephard," and "How Sweet the Hour of Closing Day," by St. George's choir, accompanied by the organist, Mrs. Naomi Graham. Pallbearers were Henry Wasson, Arthur Wasson, Roy Winters, Danny Yorke, Peter George and John Kendrick. Burial took place in St. George's Cemetery.
