  • Obituary: July 17, 1925 - February 9, 2014 Chase, Jean R.(nee Benjamin) \endash Port Howe, started a new chapter and turned the page on February 9, 2014, at the North Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Pugwash. Jean was born to Arthur and Jennie (Miles) Benjamin on July 17, 1925. She attended the Pugwash schools graduating in 1942. Subsequently she taught school in the Lower Gulf Shore for two years before attending the Provincial Normal College in Truro and launching on a 36 year teaching career. She taught in Tatamagouche, River Hebert, Amherst, Maccan, Port Howe, Rockley, Wallace Bay and then as principal of South Pugwash Consolidated School from 1959 until retirement in 1980. While teaching in Rockley she met and married Emmerson Chase and settled in Port Howe where she took a lead in the community and applied her skills to teaching Sunday School at Calvary United. She later became the Sunday School Superintendent at the Pugwash Baptist Church from 1960 \endash 1990. Jean was a dynamic woman, always full of energy, and in her long career she influenced many young minds to reach limits beyond what they would have achieved under teachers of lesser talent. Among so many memories she is remembered for the excitement she engendered at school closings and picnics and for those large ice cream cones and by the discipline she brought to class with a snap of her thumb to bring the class to attention. After retiring from teaching Jean's restless energy needed an outlet so after a year of retirement she became a missionary teacher in Liberia, Africa. Jean was always busy. For 30 years she was the Chair of the local unit of the N.S. Cancer Society, a devoted member of the Riverside Red Cross as well as President of the WHMS Society. She brought a balance and perspective to her life among family, community, church and the pursuit of a healthy life style walking faithfully three miles every day until the time of her hip replacement in 2006. Jean loved travelling to the United States, across Canada, and to Europe along with her annual trips to Bangor with her sisters, Helen and Ina, and best friend Isabel Gordon trying to find a bargain. She spent her last few years in her own apartment at East Cumberland Lodge while stricken with Alzheimer's. Jean enjoyed a short stay at White Birches in Amherst before being admitted to hospital where she was surrounded by friends and loved ones. Jean was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Emmerson and sister Ina. She is survived by son Earl and daughter-in-law Janene, grandsons, Emmerson and Alroy (Crystal) and great grandsons Adian and Cohen, all of the local area, sister Helen of Pugwash and Saint John, N.B. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Monday, Feb. 10, in Mundle's Funeral Home, 204 Water St., Pugwash, from where the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 11., with a reception to follow at the funeral home. Rev. David Young and Rev. Meggin King officiating. Burial in the Rockley Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to any charity.
