Notes

  • Obituary: Helen Frances Benjamin, 98, entered life on December 9th, 1922 in Pugwash, NS. In Saint John NB on March 30th 2021 she passed peacefully into eternal life. Her spirit will live on in her three daughters, Beverly (late Ross) Goodwin, Alhambra, Alberta; Deborah (Larry) Burke, Berwick, NS; Susan Benjamin, Saint John, NB; 11 grandchildren, Bob, Jim, Carla, Donna, Candy, April, Nancy, Hannah, Heather, Brian, and Sandra; nine great-grand-children, and many nieces and nephews.Helen is now reunited with her parents; her husband, Frank Benjamin; her only son, Brian "Bud" Benjamin; and her sisters, Jean Chase and Ina Langill. Helen worked as a Developmental Personal Care Worker at Sunset Adult Residential Centre - for a period of eight years and then later from March 5th, 1968 to October 31, 1987, for a total of 27 years. "Helen always had a professional and personal side to her work which added charm to each day. Her wonderful sense of humour and valuable wealth of knowledge contributed much to the environment of Sunset" (Oxford Journal, 1987). Helen was an active and giving member in the community of Pugwash. A lifelong member of Pugwash Memorial United Baptist church, she volunteered at the Open Hamper Food Bank, was a president of the Sunset Community Auxiliary, a member of the Women's Missionary Society, and the longest living member of Silver Spray Rebekah Lodge No. 1, and she embodied their motto, "friendship, truth and love". She was a woman of warmth, strength, love and faith. Helen always welcomed friends and family into her home for a cup of tea, a meal, a treat, or a good game of cards, and they rarely left without some advice.May we celebrate her life, her love, and her wisdom as she now dwells in the city where the roses never fade, and may we live our lives honouring her strength, character, and kindness, remembering her many life lessons: Do what makes you happy. It's better to give than to receive. Consider the source. When life throws challenges our way, know things will look better in the morning. Never interrupt progress. You must stand for something, or you'll fall for anything. You will catch a lot more flies with honey than vinegar. Be kind. Smile away your troubles; laugh and the world laughs with you. And a final piece of advice from Helen: Miss Me But Let Me Go When I come to the end of the road And the sun has set for me I want no rites in a gloom-filled room Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little-but not too long And not with your head bowed low Remember the love that we once shared Miss me-but let me go For this is a journey that we all must take And each must go alone. It's all part of the Master's plan A step on the road to home When you are lonely and sick of heart Go to the friends we know And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds Miss me but let me go. A graveside committal will take in Pugwash, NS at a date yet to be determined In memory of Helen an act of kindness or donations may be made to your local food bank Special thanks to all the wonderful staff of Kennebec Manor for all the kindness and caring shown to a Helen with special mention to her regular full time caregivers Lisa and Darlene
