  • Obituary: With a smile and a gentle wave goodbye, Barbara Koppernaes passed away peacefully at the Berkeley Halifax on Thursday December 20, 2018. Born Barbara Joan Longley on November 23, 1932 in New York City to parents John Wilberforce Longley of Halifax and Dorcas Abbott of Massachusetts, they returned to Nova Scotia shortly after her birth. She grew up on Green St., Halifax. She described a very different Halifax at a time when horses and trams were common place and Barrington St was actually called Pleasant. She graduated from the Halifax Ladies College with distinction winning the Lnt Govenor's Medal for academic excellence before attending Dalhousie University where she completed a degree in Pharmacy. It was there she met her future husband Johan Devold Koppernaes in science class where they were placed alphabetically beside each other. They were married in King's College Chapel on May 28, 1952 and after moving six times in seven years, settled in 1961 in the village of Bedford (pop 1000). They lived at First Ave and eventually at the end of Shore Drive until Johan's death on October 9, 2014. She is survived by her five children, Karen Elizabeth, Johan Abbott (Michelle) Stein Michael, Christian (Robin), Erik Devold (Angela). Known as "Nanny", she was grandmother to 11 grandchildren: Maia Elizabeth (Sam Stewart) Alexander James, Anna Margaret von Maltzahn of Halifax, Julia and Johan IV Koppernaes of Ottawa, Sean Alexander Koppernaes of Bedford, Leif, Finn, Drummond Koppernaes of South Carolina and Hannah Devold Koppernaes of Lunenburg Co. She also was step grandmother to Meghan and Adam Henneberry and Eric Cimon She was predeceased by her precious grandson Michael Koppernaes, in 2013, her husband in 2014 and cousin Charles "Cookie" Longley in 2012. She was famous for her love of the" four Bs": Books, Babies, Blooms and Boats in that order. She adored her pets over the years and was especially fond of Shelties. She loved to read and do crossword puzzles. She was happiest at the family camp in Hubbards, on any kind of boat, on a beach or seated on the covered deck aka "hidey hole on Shore Drive. An avid gardener, she was a member of the Bedford Gardening Club, was a longstanding volunteer at Scott Manor House. In the 60's she was an active member of the Junior League. She returned to work in the 70's, as a pharmacist at Sunnyside Pharmacy. Bedford Basin Yacht club was a big part of family life. Sailing and competing as a family took place for years. Rumble Mumble Goose Egg was a force to be reckoned with during its heyday and imparted a love for racing which her sons and grandchildren enjoy to this day. Barbara and Johan Koppernaes have longstanding friends who have shared their lives for over 65 years. Special mention goes to Gordon and Peggy Weld and Larry and Elise Doane. The Berkeley was home for the last 2 years. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the incredible staff at the Berkeley for their exceptional attention and care as well as Dr. Dan Carver and the staff who cared for her at the QE11 Health sciences Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made be made to LOVE Nova Scotia, Halifax Hospice. A memorial of her life will be held at Atlantic Funeral Home 6552 Bayers Rd. on Saturday January 5 at 2 pm.
