  • Obituary: Donald Allen Samuel, 86, of Corvallis died Nov. 23 at Encore Senior Village in Portland. He was born in Hood River to Ernest and Alta (McClain) Samuel. He graduated from Hood River High School in 1942. Don served in the Navy as a pilot. He attended Oregon State College where he met Opal Boyle. They were married April 11, 1948. Donald graduated from Oregon State College with a business degree. He played basketball and football for the Beavers. In 1949 he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Donald was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He was a State Farm Agent for 32 years and retired in 1986. He was a longtime member of the Elks and Moose lodges. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and golf. Don is survived by his daughter, Gayle Samuel Larsen of Corvallis; sons David and wife Janet of Albany, Scott of Corvallis, and Daniel and wife Kathy of Sunnyvale, Calif.; brother C.E. "Sam" Samuel of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal, on June 2, 2002. No public services will be held. Memorials contributions may be made to the Grace Center Adult Day Services, 980 N.W. Spruce Ave., Corvallis, or a charity of one's choice. McHenry Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
