  • Obituary: IRONWOOD, Mich. - John W. Mattatall, 86, of Ironwood, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, in Ironwood. He was born Jan. 16, 1926, in Detroit, son of the late John and Christena (Reid) Mattatall, and graduated from high school there. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S Navy, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II, and was honorably discharged as a seaman second class in 1946. John received police department training in public relations and investigation, serving as a police officer, security officer and detective in Florida, Arizona and Michigan. Moving to Ironwood, he resided at Wildwood Apartments and Pioneer Park. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1518 of Gaylord and the National Sheriff's Association, and enjoyed outdoor activities, with a special interest in fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed going to the casino. He was married to the former Lempi Sirvio of Ontonagon. She preceded him in death on June 16, 1995. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister. Surviving are his special friend and guardian, Karen Walta, of Montreal, Wis.; and numerous friends at Westgate Nursing, Rehabilitation, and Assisted Living Community in Ironwood. Cremation has taken place.
