Notes

  • Obituary: Judith Logan Birchall Kadish of Vestal died Saturday, December 29, 2007, at Binghamton General Hospital after a long battle with illness. She was predeceased by her parents, Air Commodore Leonard Birchall - famed Canadian hero of the Second World War, named by Winston Churchill "the Saviour of Ceylon" - and Dorothy Logan Birchall. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and John Chandler, Toronto, Canada; brother and sister-in-law, Charles Birchall and Hilary Geller, Ottawa, Canada; maternal aunt, Monica Williams, Canton, Ohio; nephews, David Chandler and his wife, Angela, Christopher Chandler and his wife, Elizabeth; nieces, Isabelle and Emma Birchall; grandnephews and grandnieces, Jonathan, Victoria, Alexandre, and Olivia Chandler; and dear friends, Christine Fehrenbach, Diane Matthews, Sara Opeka, and Claire Shefftz, who supported and comforted her during the past several months. Judy's family would also like to thank the many caregivers who assisted her throughout her illness. Judy's father's Air Force career enabled her to live in Paris, where she attended the Paris English School; her mastery of French was useful when she was a guide at the Montreal World's Fair. She belonged to the Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities and served as a docent when the first "King Tut" exhibit in North America came to Toronto. She worked at the University of Toronto while she lived in Canada, and at Ithaca College after she moved to Vestal. She then furthered her education by enrolling in Empire State College and receiving her BA degree. Among her many interests, she was skilled in sewing and upholstery and known to be a gourmet cook. She volunteered at the Animal Care Council in Endicott, brought them blankets, handmade toys, and food, and looked after stray cats in her neighborhood in addition to her own Siamese cats, including the last surviving one, Ta-Sheri. Following the passing of her father, Judy took the time and expense of copying his Japanese prisoner of war diaries that are being kept in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. She delivered copies of the diaries to family members as well as to Canada's Royal Military College as a lasting reminder of the Air Commodore's courage and sacrifice. Memorial services will be held at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, Thursday at 6 p.m. Rev. John R. Martinichio will officiate. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Animal Care Council, 131 Washington Avenue, Endicott, N.Y. 13760. Press & Sun-Bulletin Binghampton,NY Jan. 2, 2008
