"Larry" Cavanaugh Sr., 82, died on Friday afternoon at the Saints Memorial Campus of Lowell General Hospital surrounded by his entire family. Born in Lowell, the son of the late Lawrence Cavanaugh and the late Dorothy (Maguire) (Cavanaugh) Donahue. He was a lifelong communicant of the former Sacred Heart Parish where he served as an altar boy, and was a graduate of Lowell High School. Upon graduation, Larry served in the U.S. Army and went on to spend his entire working career in the U.S. Postal Service in Lowell and Woburn, until his retirement in 1991. Other than his family, the game of basketball was Larry's passion. Larry played on the New England State Champion CYO team from Sacred Heart in 1949, and was a standout point guard at Lowell High School. In 1953, Larry joined the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO) - Boston Board 27 and became an active basketball referee. In 1959, Larry was instrumental in the founding of IAABO Board 95 in Lowell as a charter member, and was the only remaining original member in 2017. He was elected as IAABO 95 President in 1978, and as Rules Interpreter in 1982 - a position which he held to train all area officials for 31 years, until his retirement to an emeritus advisory position in April of 2014. Larry had an outstanding career as an active basketball official that spanned 35 years at both the high school and collegiate levels. At the college level, he worked the ECAC, Ivy League, Big East and the former Yankee Conference. At the high school level, he worked nearly every major conference in Northeastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire and presided over numerous MIAA and Tech Tourney championships at the old Boston Garden. In 1992, he received the prestigious award of IAABO Life Membership from the international organization. For many years, Larry served as the Program Director for the K.C. Jones/ All Pro Basketball Camp, as well as the director of basketball at both the adult and youth level for the City of Lowell Recreation Dept. If there was basketball being played in the Lowell area, Larry was somehow involved with it. He was also an avid golfer and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Country Club where he hit a hole in one on two occasions. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 55 years - Beverly (Manning), as well as his son, Larry Jr. and his wife, Sharyn, his daughter, Karen Espinola, and his youngest daughter, Donna Rafferty and her husband, John; all of Lowell. He is survived by his grandchildren, Meagan Cavanaugh, (Lawrence) Matthew Cavanaugh, Michael Cavanaugh, Kristen Espinola, Katelyn Espinola, Alec Espinola, Julia Espinola, Chelsea Rafferty, Jake Rafferty, Kyle Rafferty, Sam Khudari, and his great-grandson, (Lawrence) Matthew Cavanaugh; all of Lowell. He is also survived by his brother, John and sister-in-law, Nancy of Chelmsford; his sister-in-law, Jane Barnes of Andover; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
