  • Obituary: Halifax Herald 6/22/2004 MANNING, Fredrick Johnston "Fred" - Died peacefully in Shelburne, Sunday, June 20, 2004. Fred was born in Liverpool, November 16, 1916, and lived much of his life in New York City, but returned to Nova Scotia in 2000 to live with his niece, Mary. Fred was predeceased by his brother, Walter Manning (Liverpool), and his long-term partner, Chuck Valdes (Manhattan, N.Y.). He is survived by niece, Mary Manning, Shelburne; nephew, David Manning (Maggie), Milford Station; great-nieces, Alison Hallet, Wolfville; Sarah Manning, Milford Station; great-nephews, Kendall Hallet, Kelowna, B.C.; Neil Manning, Milford Station; John Hallet, Shelburne. Fred was one of two sons of Captain B.W.C. Manning and his wife Clara (Ryan) (Liverpool), and graduated from Acadia University in 1938. He worked for most of his life with the Royal Bank of Canada, including many years as manager of currency exchange services in Manhattan. A consummate traveler, Fred visited his family in Nova Scotia often and spent parts of most years in Europe, returning there often to visit friends in France and Greece. In New York City and then in Shelburne, Fred was an inveterate walker and his daily jaunts became an essential part of his life. For many in Shelburne, hardly a day passed without a pleasant and interesting encounter with "Uncle Fred". Funeral service Wednesday, June 23, at 2 p.m. in Trinity United Church, Shelburne. Interment in the Anglican Cemetery, Liverpool, at a later date. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Osprey Arts Centre, Shelburne. Arrangements under the direction of H.M. Huskilson's Funeral Home, Shelburne.
