  • Obituary: The community was saddened at the news of the death of Lawrence Mitchell Phinney of Parrsboro. Mr. Phinney was killed instantly on July 7th in an accident at his work with the St. John Tug Boat Company at North Head (Grand Manan) N.B. Born in Parrsboro 44 years ago, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Phinney of Parrsboro. He is survived by his parents, a daughter Cecelia (Mrs Philip Lamb) of Long Branch, Toronto; sisters Rhoda (Mrs Herb Blenkhorne), Marguerite (Mrs Roy Winters) and Ceclia (Midge) - Mrs. Russell Parker, all of Parrsboro. The deceased received his early education in the Parrsboro schools and for the past eight years had been employed with the St. John Tug Boat Company as cook, and at the time of his death, as captain of the barge. He was a member of St. George's Anglican Church, Ivanhoe, I.O.O.F. Lodge, Branch No. 44, and Branch No. 45, Royal Canadian Legion. He served in the Canadian Army during World War II. He was widely known and was well liked by the many friends he made during his lifetime. Friday evening the members of Ivanhoe I.O.O.F. Lodge held a service at Smith's Funeral Chapel which was conducted by Brother Maurice Gilbert, Lodge members, family and friends were in attendance. The funeral service was held on Saturday, July 10th from St. George's Church, Parrsboro conducted by Rev. Edward Tuck. The choir of the church was in attendance and led in the singing of "Unto the Hills." "Abide With Me", and "The Lord's My Shepherd". Pallbearers were Cyril Johnson (representing the Fire Department), Comrades Basil Winters and Chris Brown, from the Legion; and Brothers Maurice Gilbert, Walter Byers and Dick Fife, from the Oddfellows. A Legion service was held at the graveside, led by Comrade Eldridge Winters, Comrade Bernie Burke sounded the reveille and the last post and the Legion members paid their last respects.
