  • Obituary: Mr. Ernest S. Shaffner, of Pine, Oregon, third son of Dea, John Shaffner of Lawrencetown, while working in his mine was the victim of an accident on Jan. 8th which terminated fatally eight days later. The best medical aid available could not save life and he passed away at the early age of 38 years. While in his youth at 17 years of age he united with the Baptist church at Nictaux, being baptized by Rev. J. Clark. During the intervening years he has proven of his christian character by a life of unselfishness and self denial. Because of his largeness of heart and thoughtfulness for his friends he was a general favorite with all who knew him. About two months before his death, he married Miss Mary Wilson of his adopted town. The young widow in the far West, as well as the bereaved father, mother and relatives in the home land, have the sympathy of a host of friends. The funeral services were conducted Jan. 19th by Rev. C.S. Coberley of Richland, Oregon, assisted by the I.O.O.F. of which he was a member. J.E. Shaffner of Lawrencetown, Mrs. (Rev.) O.N. Chipman of Canso, L.S. Shaffner and L.P. Shaffner of this town are the surviving members of the family.
