  • Obituary: Retired Col. James "Jim" Winning, 91, of Huntsville passed away Wednesday. A native of Glasgow, Scotland, Jim arrived in America at age six with a tiny band of Scots, traveling on the Megantic, sister ship of the Titanic. Jim retired in 1972 from his civilian position with the Army Missile Command as a military strategist. He had served with pride in the U.S. Army and Alabama National Guard for over 30 years, commanding the 1169th Engineering Group in his final post, and having fought in distant islands in the Pacific during World War II and in Korea. He often opined that there was no mission that the United States Army could not do. Jim was a leader of men, always upright and honorable, and a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jill Winning, and his parents, Hugh and Anna MacLachlan Winning. Survivors include his wife, Mary Catherine Winning; son, James Clements Winning and wife Lauren of Annapolis, Md.; daughters, Constance Winning Aguda and husband Salvador of Winter Springs, Fla., Stephanie Werdehoff and husband Bill of Huntsville; Carol MacLachlan of Nashville, and Joy Pickett and husband Pete of Athens; and four grandchildren.
