Notes

  • Obituary: FRANCIS, David Leonard - 77, loving husband and father, died on June 1, 2005, in QEII Health Sciences Centre. He was predeceased by parents, James Thomas Francis and Mary Louise Crewe; sisters, Doris and Anne; brothers, Hartley, Harvey, and Albert. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Estelle (Roche); sisters, Hilda and Eileen; children, John, Ottawa; Ellen (Estabrooks), New Hampshire; Paula (Simmons), Brooklyn; Karen (Marvin), Kenneth and Christine (Davies), all in Dartmouth; Angela (Parker), Upper Tantallon. David's family brought him the gift of 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Always quick to mention the Newfoundland heritage of his parents and his older siblings, David was actually born in Halifax and spent his childhood years exploring St. George's Round Church, where his father was caretaker. As a young man, David proudly served in the Canadian Merchant Navy, an experience which shaped the rest of his life. After the Merchant Navy, he worked for 29 years at Nova Scotia Light and Power. An outgoing character who sought and enjoyed the company of others, David enjoyed fishing, was an avid bowler, and practiced growing giant pumpkins in his garden. He took particular pride in his homemade sausage, a craft refined by the taste-testing of appreciative family members and friends. David loved music and played many instruments, his favourite being the mandolin. He was a faithful member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish. David possessed a wry sense of humour, with an ever present grin and a sparkle in his eye that spoke of his tendency to mischief and his passion for life. He will be dearly missed. David is resting in Dartmouth Funeral Home, Queen Street, Dartmouth. Visitation will be today from 2-4 p.m. and again from 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass will be held Saturday, June 4, at 1:30 p.m. in St. Vincent de Paul Church, Flying Cloud Drive, Dartmouth. Internment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville. After interment, there will be a reception for the family and David's many friends at 2 Coronation Cres. in Colby Village, Dartmouth, at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Building Fund or Royal Canadian Legion Benevolent Fund.
