  • Obituary: DAVID HEIDT STOKES SWEARINGEN, 79, of Memphis, died July 15, 2006, in Chattanooga, TN. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and a U.S. Navy veteran. Mr. Swearingen, an advertising and marketing executive, is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary B. Swearingen; daughters, Anne L. Swearingen of Memphis, Dr. Lynn Swearingen of Chattanooga and Jane M. Swearingen-Tomer of Los Angeles, and grandchildren, Christopher T. Duty, Matthew T. Duty, Mary Allison Wright and John David Wright; and two great-granddaughters. Services will be Thursday, July 20, at 11 a.m. at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel, with burial in Memorial Park. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be sent to the David H. Swearingen Student Scholarship Fund with the Memphis Advertising Federation. Dedicating his entire life to the marketing field, Mr. Swearingen used his welcoming personality and creative flare to become one of Memphis' most successful marketers. "He knew exactly what to say to put a smile on anyone's face," said friend, Dan Conaway. "That's why he was excellent at what he did." On Saturday, David H. Swearingen , U.S. Navy veteran, marketing pioneer, father and husband, died at Parkridge Hospital in Chattanooga. He was 77. Mr. Swearingen earned a marketing degree from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. After returning from the Navy, he created his own marketing firm, Brick Muller, Swearingen & Dorrity, which became Swearingen and Conaway in 1974. He was chairman of the company from 1982-87. "With his job, he had the ability to make simple things seem spectacular," said daughter Anne Swearingen of Memphis. For 15 years, Mr. Swearingen worked with friend and partner Conaway to maintain their marketing firm. While working with his firm, Mr. Swearingen won many awards, including the silver medal from the American Advertising Federation in 1969. Mr. Swearingen later worked as the marketing director for The Commercial Appeal for 10 years until he retired in 1998. "We were fortunate to get Dave at The Commercial Appeal after he had already established himself as the ad man for Memphis," said Paul Jewell, interim marketing director at The Commercial Appeal. "Everyone loved him here." He created the national Student Advertising competition during his reign as governor of the 7th "Deep South" district of the American Advertising Federation in 1968. Mr. Swearingen leaves his wife of 61 years, Mary B. Swearingen; two additional daughters, Dr. Lynn Swearingen of Chattanooga and Jane M. Swearingen-Tomer of Los Angeles; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel with burial in Memorial Park.
