  • Obituary: The death of Harold Mayes, husband of the late Helen (Tapley) Mayes, occurred at St. Joseph's Hospital on Wednesday, February 11, 2015. He was born on July 8, 1926 at Saint John to the late Harold and Charlotte (Carr) Mayes. Harold attended Beaconsfield, Rothesay Netherwood Schools and Mount Allison Academy. His working career took him to Driscoll's Lumber Mill, Lancaster Police Department for four years, Saint John Port and the New Brunswick Motor Vehicle Office as a driver examiner for 21 years. Harold had retired as Captain of the Saint John Salvage Corps and Fire Police. He volunteered for the Lancaster Fire Department and is a proud honourary member of the Saint John Fire Fighters Local 773. Harold also held an honorary membership in the Saint John Firefighters Association Local 771 I.A.F.F. His hobbies included collecting toy fire trucks, of which he has donated over 200 hundred to the Firefighters Museum. He had tremendous stamina, Harold volunteered for or was a member of: the Rally of Hope, Relay for Life, Rocmaura Nursing Home, Saint John Regional Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital, New Brunswick High School Hockey Council, past-president and District Governor of the Lions Club Saint John, Charter member of Inter-City Civil Service Bowling League 1964, Saint John Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, Festival-By-The Sea, Saint John Sports Hall of Fame Committee, Brentwood Board Member and Fire Warden, Santa Claus Committee, Ford World Curling Committee, past member of Saint John and Western District Crime Stoppers, Blue Knights NB II, UCT Jack Kidd Council, Saint John Taxi By-Law, National Harbours Board, Saint John Seniors Citizens Committee and a Honourary Captain of the Saint John Salvage Corps and Fire Police when he received his prized award, the first ever Honourary Captains Badge from the Salvage Corps and Fire Police. Harold was honoured with various appreciation awards: Maritimes Fire Chiefs Association Certificate of which he was a member from 1970, City of Saint John Plaque for 48 years Volunteer Fire Service, Certificate of Appreciation from KV Mulch Committee, Saint John Lions Club '96 Lion of the Year and President's Awards and Merit Award from the Province of NB , he received the Community Service Award November 15, 2007, Merit Award City of Saint John, August 2, 2010 on the occasion of New Brunswick Day. Harold was past president of Southern High School Hockey for 10 years, Warden of the Port, City of Saint John, District Emergency Measures coordinator from 1979, N.B. High School Council (Life Membership) 1993. He received the medal for Fire Service Exemplary from Governor General Jeanne Sauve and was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee medal in 2002. He was given a plaque in recognition of 60 years service to Fire and Life Safety of the citizens of Saint John, NB in February of 2005. Harold lead the procession for Her Majesty Queen's visit on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee. Harold is survived by his many friends. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Monday February 11, 2015 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. The funeral service will be held from Brenan's Chapel on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at 12 noon. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Saint John Salvage Corps, Constable Douglas Larche Bursary Fund (Greater Saint John Community Foundation) or the Saint John Police Department Museum would be appreciated by Harold.
