  • Obituary: It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden death at Ridgewood Veterans Wing, Saint John, NB, of Gerald Spencer Brewer on October 31, 2015. Gerald was the husband of the late Edith Elizabeth "Timmy" Brewer (Tapley). Gerald was born on February 7, 1924 in Burtt's Corner, NB. His late parents were Spencer Ambrose Brewer and Estella Amelia Brewer (Flewelling). Gerry was the last surviving member of his immediate family being predeceased by older brothers Elwood and William. He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Linda Jennex (Jim), daughter-in-law, Fennella Brewer, widow of Steven, grandchildren: Shelly Dauphinee (Jon) of Saint John, Cindy Westra (Doug) Okotoks of Alberta, Bonnie El Sayed (Jamie) of Beijing, China, Spencer Brewer of Calgary, and great grandchildren: Emma, Cate and Will Dauphinee, Pieter and Andrew Westra, and Miara El Sayed. Gerry came to Saint John for high school in 1939, graduating from Saint John Vocational School. After six months of employment with Dominion Bank he enlisted in the army in January 1943. Gerry served in the Militia for more than 25 years; was commissioned from the ranks and retired a Captain to the reserve officers' listed in the mid 1970's. In 1946 Gerry accepted employment with the Board of School Trustees of Saint John. Later he was appointed as an Assistant Superintendent of Schools responsible for non-academic services. He also was appointed Secretary of the Board. His retirement in 1986 proudly marked the completion of 40 years of service to the schools of the greater Saint John area. One of his main interests beyond his career was community service through his 62 year membership in the International Association of Lions Clubs. At the time of his death he was a member of the Jemseg Lions Club. In recognition of his work he was awarded Life Membership in Lions International. Gerry was well known for his keen, dry sense of humour and his social interaction. He was always a good friend and a loving father and husband. Later in life he enjoyed playing golf, loved playing cards, and working on his computer. Gerry and Timmy traveled extensively in the US and in Europe. They spent 19 years wintering in Florida and summering in the Cambridge-Narrows. Prior to severe vision loss, Gerry was an avid reader of newspapers, magazines and books, keeping up on international and local news, and loved to debate the current events. Sincere thanks to all the staff members of Ridgewood Veterans Wing for the excellent care, kindness and support given to Gerry during his 2 ½ year residency. Following cremation, a Funeral Service will be held at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) on Thursday, November 5, 2015 at 2:00 PM to celebrate Gerry's life. A reception will be held after the service to which relatives and friends will be welcomed to celebrate Gerry's memories. Burial service in the family plot in Burtt's Corner Cemetery will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of the donor's choice will be appreciated. Online condolences may be placed at www.brenansfh.com.
