  • Obituary: Margaret Florence (Martin) Diesman. Daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, educator, author. Born to Caroline Margaret (Carter), and John A. Martin. Oldest of two children. Florence received her bachelor's degree from Nebraska State Teacher's College in 1930, and her M.A. from the University of Chicago in 1937. She taught high school English in Illinois, and later joined the English faculty at Nebraska State Teacher's College. Married Albert D. Diesman in early 1944. One child, Carolynn. Divorced from Albert, After the divorce Florence kept her married surname, and used her maiden name as her middle name, as "Florence Martin Diesman", hence the "Florence M. Diesman" on her grave marker. Florence came to Washington State College (Pullman WA) (later Washington State University) in 1946. During the 1963-64 school year she visited 22 high schools, studying and developing teaching programs in English. She served on a number of WSU committees, including the Discipline and Humanities Curriculum committees. Florence was a Trustee of the Wesley Foundation, as well as a member of the Relations Committee & President of the Wesleyan Fellowship. Florence was on the board of Phi Kappa Phi. She was also a YWCA advisor, and a member of Simpson Methodist Church. At the time of her passing, Florence was an Associate Professor of English at WSU. Services were held on October 2, 1968 at Simpson Methodist Church in Pullman WA, and were officiated by Pastor William G. Berney.
