  • Obituary: Margalo Ann Vix passed away peacefully at the Sequoyah Manor Nursing Home in Sallisaw, Oklahoma on Sunday, June 16, 2013, surrounded by family, friends, memories and love. Prior to her long-term medical complexity, she lived on her beloved small ranch in Sallisaw for 31 years. She entered this world 80 years ago in San Francisco, Calif. She continued to live in the San Francisco Bay Area until her departure to Oklahoma in 1982. Her parents were Margaret Gibbs-Mantague and Vernon Gibbs from Washington State. She was the eldest of three children. She was named after an actress of the 1920s, Margalo Gilmore. She attended Castlemont High School in Oakland, Calif., and in 1951 she married Mike Scavo; they have two daughters, Maureen and Michelle. She and her husband moved from Oakland, Calif. to Hayward, Calif., in 1955. Margalo and Mike divorced in 1968 and she moved to Santa Clara, Calif., with her daughters. In 1970, she met and married Darrell Vix and moved to Milpitas, Calif. She was instrumental in organizing and coaching the Milpitas Softball League for high school age girls in Milpitas. Her 30-year banking career started with Bank of America in Fremont, Calif. After she moved to Oklahoma in 1982, she continued her career in the banking business in Fort Smith, Ark., until her retirement. One of her life-long interests and passions was raising Appaloosa horses. It was this dream that she followed the trail to Oklahoma settling in Sallisaw on a small seven acre ranch; her dream a reality. In her younger years, she loved the opportunity of adventure on the numerous road trips she and her sister would experience with their young children. She and Darrell enjoyed camping, boating and water skiing. The family spent many summer vacations at Shasta Lake in Northern California. In her later years, she discovered the enjoyment of writing country western songs. Margalo was secretary for the Brent Volunteer Fire Department for numerous years as well as volunteering for the local water company in Brent. Because she cared about the community in which she lived, she volunteered for numerous other non-profits in the Brent area. One of her most passionate interest in her later years was her contribution for the Bizzy Beez Hospice Volunteers of which she was one. She is survived by her husband, Darrell Vix of Sallisaw; two daughters, Maureen Scavo of Fremont, Calif. and Michelle Fletcher of Sonora, Calif.; her brother Gary Gibbs of Wickenburg, Ariz.; her sister, Carol Brownson of Cottage Grove, Ore.; grandson, Michael Scavo of Sallisaw; their spouses; and her three great-grandchildren, also of Sallisaw. Margalo's family would like to recognize and thank the Brent community for their on-going support during this difficult time; the caregivers at Sequoyah Manor Nursing Home in Sallisaw, as well as those who supported her through Hospice with Peter's Agency and made her last month of life comfortable and safe. She will be sorely missed by so many who loved her and whose life she touched throughout the years. Please join family and friends for Margalo's Celebration of Life at 2 p.m. Friday, June 21, 2013, at the Brent Community Center located at U.S. Highway 59 and State Highway 141. Wear your jeans, T-shirts, flip-flops or cowboy boots and bring your favorite photo and stories about this incredible woman named Margalo. The family asks that any remembrances in her name be made to Hospice. In the end what matters most is How well we have loved How well we have lived And how well did we learn to let go.
