Notes

  • Obituary: Steven Glen Minuth, 65, long time resident of Dunsmuir, passed away September 17,2012. Steve was born in Oakland, CA to Glen and Beverly Minuth and moved to Dunsmuir at the age of seven where Glen was a long time sixth grade school teacher and Beverly was a long time employee of the California State EDD and volunteer at Mercy Medical Center in later years. Steve attended Dunsmuir Elementary School and graduated from Dunsmuir High School in 1965. He attended Sacramento State University where he earned his degree in Environmental Resources. In 1969, he married Jeanie Goodsell and they lived in Sacramento while he finished his education. They moved back to Dunsmuir where Steve became City Park Manager. It was there that he undertook different building projects and became interested in construction which led him to acquiring his contractor's license, changing his career to a building and remodeling business. In the early 1990s Steve was invited to join the Rotary Club of Dunsmuir where he demonstrated his passion for serving others, becoming a living example of the Rotary motto of "Service above Self." In his capacity as a Rotarian and on his own he volunteered and served the community for many years. Some of the projects he was involved in with Rotary were building school bus shelters, Dictionaries for Third Graders, Foreign Exchange Student program, Pancake Breakfast for Railroad Days, Tinman Triathlon, as well as a trip to Costa Rica to assist with a dental clinic. Steve was a recipient of Rotary's Paul Harris Award to honor his commitment to the work of Rotary. He was in charge of the physical logistics in setting up the Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens, Tribute to the Trees Concert every year. After many, many years of community service, Steve was honored with the prestigious Alexander Dunsmuir Award presented by the City of Dunsmuir. Upon changing his Rotary classification to Honorary Rotarian '96 an honor reserved for outstanding exemplars of Rotary principles including Neil Armstrong, Roald Amundsen, and Jimmy Carter '96 he continued following his passions for barbershop singing and astronomy. He recently developed an interest in trap shooting! Steve had a love for dogs which could be seen in his collection of keys to friend's houses that showed the name of the dog rather than the name of the person whose homes he looked after -- a tribute to how well-trusted Steve was by his community. Among Steve's many passions for service to others, helping the elders of Dunsmuir was particularly strong. He was always available to make emergency repairs, drive a friend, or help in any way he could. He had a particular love and commitment to Reva Coon, the "First Lady of Dunsmuir." Steve felt blessed to be able to care for his mother until her recent death. He also supported Jeanie in the care of her mother. Steve will be remembered as a genuine, kind and caring person who would do anything for anyone at anytime. And he could fix anything! Steve's final act of giving was his wish to be an organ donor. He will live on in the lives of others who are recipients of his gesture. He was preceded in death by his father, Glen and mother, Beverly; his sister-in-law, Sue; and his beloved dog, Margaux. He is survived by his devoted wife, Jeanie; brother, Mike; sister Linda and her husband Thomas; and many nephews and nieces. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorial donations be made to either the Rotary Club of Dunsmuir, PO Box 263, Dunsmuir or to the Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens, PO Box 242, Dunsmuir. A celebration of life service will be held on September 29, 2012 at 1:00 at the former Dunsmuir Methodist Church at 4303 Oak Street, Dunsmuir, CA 96025.
