He was the second son of the late Reverend Israel Potter. He was ordained to the ministry in 1837, and succeeded his venerable father in the pastorate of the church of which he continued for a number of years a faithful minister. On the 16th of January previous to his death he was called to part with his youngest daughter, Miss Abigail S Potter, by Reverend A Cogswell.
