  • Obituary: Ocala - Dr. Nat 'Tinker' Baggarly completed his 87 years on this earth on Friday, December 2nd, 2016 and began his new life in Christ that very same day. Born in Washington, DC and raised in New York, Chicago and finally Lexington, KY, Nat completed his education in music at the University of Kentucky before serving his country in the Air Force during the Korean conflict. After 4 years in the Air Force Band in Washington DC, Nat headed south to Florida where he was the band director at P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School in Gainesville in the late 1950's and early 1960's, then later taught at Eau Gallie high School in Brevard County, and Brevard Community College in Cocoa, FL, (Now Eastern Florida State College). At BCC he was the jazz band director and woodwinds instructor, as well as a professor of music history, theory, and humanities. He later was promoted to division chairman of fine arts and then associate dean of instruction. After retiring in 1994 he still continued to teach and mentor students until 2002. This was his calling and his first love. Nat took an active role in the church as an Elder, Church Council President, member of the school board and a church musician at Trinity Lutheran Church and School in Rockledge, FL. After moving to Ocala with his family in 2009, he continued praising God by singing in the choir and playing hand bells at Our Redeemer Lutheran. Nat is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 47 years, Claire of Ocala, FL; their son Mark; daughter-in-love, Kristen and princess, Addison of Jonesborough, TN; their Dutch son, Hans Rijken van Olst and family of Utrecht, Holland. Also surviving him is his beloved sister Arlene Hoffer of The Woodlands, TX; nieces and nephews, Gail, Stephen, Stephanie, Stewart and their families; his extended family through Claire; brother, Loys and Sharon Ann Johnson; sisters, Eunice Johnson, Dawn (Johnson) and Pat O'Byrne and niece and nephew Nicole and Loys Aaron and their families. He is also survived by many of his Phi Beta Mu Honorary Band Fraternity brothers and sisters, his friends and thousands of his students who will remember his warm smile, quick wit, and true love for them. He received many honors and accolades throughout his life, but the greatest honor was to serve his God, his family, his country, and his students. A service of joy and celebration will be held on January 7th, 2017 at 1:00 pm in the Saratoga Room of the Ocala Hilton Hotel. Donations honoring Nat can be sent to a hospice of your choosing or an educational foundation supporting music. Ocala Star-Banner Ocala,FL January 4,2017
