  • Obituary: Russell E. Smith Sr., 86, of Vineland passed away on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 14, 2010, in the South Jersey Healthcare Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Smith was born and raised in Vineland, where he was a lifelong city resident. He was the son of the late Ruth (Bell) and Warren A. Smith. Mr. Smith retired as a rural letter carrier from the U.S. Postal Service, serving in the Vineland post office. Prior to and after his military service, Mr. Smith also was employed as the assistant manager at the Landis Theatre. He also had been employed as an egg inspector for the Vineland Egg Auction. Prior to World War II, he was a member of the Headquarter Co., N.J. National Guard 157th Field Artillery Unit. Russell enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1943 and served as a sergeant in the 8th and 9th Air Forces in the European Theatre of Operations. After World War II, he -- along with many other veterans -- helped organize the 114th Tank Battalion, N.J. National Guard in Vineland. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 157 and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association. After his retirement, he enjoyed working as a volunteer at the Newcomb Medical Center and later at the N.J. Veterans Memorial Home. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sally (Esposito); three sons, Russell E. Jr. and wife Lyn, Robert W. and wife Maureen, and David G. and wife Jackie; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Warren, Allan and William.
