  • Obituary: June Louise (Westgate) Millett, 85, of Whitman, MA, peacefully passed away on April 2, 2011 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton, surrounded by family and friends. June was born in 1925 in Rochester, MA and later moved to W. Wareham, MA, with her family where she spent her childhood. She was the beloved wife of the late Oliver Millett, Jr., daughter of the late Charles and Louise (Hinks) Westgate and sister of the late Shirley Westgate. June graduated from Wareham High in 1942.She furthered her education at Boston University where she graduated in 1946 and later received her master's degree from Bridgewater State College in 1957. June began her teaching career in 1946. In 1955 June taught at Whitman-Hanson High School and later was head of the mathematics department, 1959-1970: she continued her teaching career at Abington High School as a mathematics teacher and head of the mathematics department 1970-1993 from where she retired. June was an active member of several organizations. She was a 74 year member and officer of the Grange, belonging to the Abington, Wareham, Sippican Pomona, Mayflower North Pomona chapters, State Grange and mentor to the Junior Grange. June sponsored the Dictionary Project for all 3rd grade students in Abington, taught and sponsored projects for the Junior Grange and was well known for her piano music at Grange activities. She was also a member and officer of the Abington Historical Society, Wareham Alumni, Edith Stuart chase Foundation and REAM; Friends of the Library of Whitman and a member of the readings groups in Whitman, Rockland and Abington. June was a member of First Congregational Church of Whitman UCC, where she served on several committees and founded the Main Spring Lunch program as a community service project with the Youth Group. June was always a teacher and donated her body to science to further the education of students. She is survived by cousins, Rachel, Charles, Bob, Herb, Glenn Rowley; Esther and Jimmy Atherton; a sister-in-law Mrs. Robert (Barbara) Millett and family of Stoneham, MA., Mr. & Mrs. Carl Dornish of Maine and family; Mr. & Mrs. Chester J. Millett, Jr. and family of Brockton, a special cousin Cathy (Millett) Shea of Brockton, a special daughter of her heart Cindy Landreville and several dear and close friends. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday April 30th at 5:30PM at the First Congregational Church of Whitman, UCC, 519 Washington St, Whitman, MA 02382.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Main Spring Lunch program at the First Congregational Church of Whitman, UCC, 519 Washington St, Whitman, MA or the Whitman Food Pantry, C/O Alice Tavitian, 33 Pleasant St, Whitman, MA 02382.
