  • Obituary: John W. Fisher of Bozeman died unexpectedly at home on Feb. 10, 2001. He was born in Stevensville, on Jan. 4, 1920, to Roy W. Fisher and Mattie Gardner Fisher. John grew up in Bozeman. After graduating from Montana State College in 1941, he served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines. He was captured early in World War II, took part in the Bataan Death March, and was a prisoner of war in the Philippines and Japan until the end of the war. John served as a career Foreign Service Officer from 1947-1974. He met Dorothy Hansen in his first overseas post of Guatemala, and they were married in 1949. During his career he also served in Washington, D.C., Colombia, Austria, Honduras, Bolivia and Venezuela. John and Dorothy moved to Bozeman upon his retirement. John was active in various capacities in the Bozeman community for many years, including participating in the Civil Air Patrol, the Audubon Society, and the Sourdough Volunteer Fire Company, assisting in bringing National Public Radio to Bozeman, and supporting the Bozeman Public Library. John's wife, Dorothy, died in 1990. His immediate family includes sister, Virginia Spangler; daughter, Beverly (Hans) Villinger; sons, Rich (Kathryn) and Jack (Helen) Fisher; and grandchildren, Philip, Patrick and Thea.
