Notes

  • Obituary: Virginia Fisher Spangler died on June 1, 2006, at Country Home Estates in Missoula. She was born to Mattie and Roy Fisher on July 31, 1915, in Hamilton, where her father had been a horticulturalist in the apple orchards. After his death in Victor, she and her mother and three siblings moved back to the family home in Bozeman where Virginia completed her education at Montana State College. She taught in Simms, Mont., where she met her husband, Truitt B. Spangler, a teacher and administrator. There they raised three children and participated in many community affairs for over 30 years. The lived in Highwood, Mont., for 14 years and then settled in Great Falls. She lived in Missoula for one and a half years before her death. Her parents, her husband, a sister Katherine Fisher, and brothers Edward and John Fisher preceded her in death. Her children, Roy W. Spangler of Great Falls, Susanne Phelps and husband Kerry of Castle Rock, Colo., Carolyn Eagle Abbott and husband Jerry of Missoula; granddaughters Amy and Ann Eagle; her special nephews Richard, Jack and Joe Fisher; and nieces Nancy Ann Fisher and Beverly Fisher Villinger survive her. Virginia was the light and life of her family and of many circles of friends and acquaintances. She was an active church and civic volunteer in each of her communities. She loved to play bridge and to travel, and she had a passion for learning. She was physically fit and active until very recent years. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 17, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 2900 Ninth Avenue South in Great Falls. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to Easter Seals of Montana, 4400 Central Avenue, Great Falls, MT 59405-1695, or to the Truitt Spangler Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of First National Bank, Drawer 9, Fairfield, MT 59436. The family appreciated the especially tender and competent care Virginia received from the staff at Newman's Country Home Estates in her last year and a half.
