  • Obituary: Groton - George E. McNeil, 88, of Groton and Acton, died at Apple Valley Center on July 23, 2008. He was born in Boston on February 1, 1920, son of the late James and Phoebe (Sawin) McNeil and was the husband of the late Catherine (Reed) McNeil who died in 2006. George grew up in Malden and was a Latin Scholar in High School which sparked his life long love of language, words and reading. As a young man he was a chauffeur to an elderly lady driving a new car which later became his passion - automobiles. He also worked for Boston Cab Company. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WW2 where he trained at Wofford College. Mr. McNeil later worked as a machinist at General Electric in Everett for 39 years and retired in the mid-1970's. He had made his home in Stoneham for several years then moved to Falmouth, Cape Cod. George and his wife later moved to Ocala, FL and most recently Groton. He was a lover of Jazz, animals, Red Sox, and the City of Boston.. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Malden, the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and a member of the Unitarian Church. His survivors include 2 daughters, Carolee and her husband George Schaffer of Acton and Beverly and her husband Forrest Nelson of Amherst, NH.; 4 Grandchildren, Lynne Adams and her wife Barbara Wiseman of Pelham, MA, Hannah and her husband Keith Cross of Worcester, and Christine and her husband David McAvay of Framingham and Greg and his wife Yvette Nelson of Nashua, NH. He is also survived by his great grandchildren Camryn and Stratton Adams, Nigel Cross, Eliot and William McAvay and Phoebe Nelson. A Private Service will be held at the convenience of the family.
