  • Obituary: The death of Mrs Sarah Bacon (Childs) Phinney came as a sudden and sad shock to her large circle of relatives and friends.Mrs Phinney was born 71 years ago in Nantucket, where her girlhood was spent. She remembered the "big fire" of that place. At that time her father Deacon James Childs, with his carpenters was at work here, building the Congregational church. The fire was seen distinctly from here, and he with others set out immediately for the island, and were of great assistance in extinguishing the flames. She married Capt Alonzo L Phinney, and has since resided here. She was a faithful member of the Congregational church and the Ladies' Sewing Circle.Until the nervous decline of the last few years, she was very active in all forms of Christian work, and is best remembered as big hearted, hospitable and generous soul, whom to know was to love.
