  • Obituary: Joseph H Phinney died at his home here January 31,at the age of 72 years. He was born in Cotuit his parents being Lewis and Julia . He began going to sea at eleven years of age, as cook, and continued until master of several vessels in the coasting trade. At 18 he enlisted in the Civil War in the 16th Mass Battery, serving eighteen months when the war closed.In his later years he took out pleasure sailing parties. He was a member of the Grand Army, a Mason and a member of the Knights of Pythias, he was also an honorary member of the Boston Marine Society. He leaves a widow, Ida M Phinney, one son Elmer W who is stationed at Newport in the naval service, and one daughter Mrs Chauncey Smith of Millbury. The funeral of Captain Phinney was held Sunday afternoon, the Reverend Thomas Lutman of Centerville officiating.Members of Wequaquet Lodge, Knights of Pythias were present and performed the ritual of their order. There was singing by Mrs L.M. Boody,Miss Eliza F . Smith,Messrs C.H Nye and H A Stevens.
