  • Obituary: Kenneth Ward Newcomb of Newton, a retired rail worker and community activist, died Monday at Meadows Nursing Home in Leicester. He was 93. Born in Newton, he was raised in Needham and attended local schools. He worked for the New York Central, Penn Central and Con Rail in the accounting department, retiring in 1971. As a community activist, Mr. Newcomb was dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Newton's Upper Falls neighborhood. His book, "Makers of the Mold," on the history of Upper Falls, was published on the Web site of the Friends of Hemlock Gorge. He served on the Newton Zoning Board of Appeals 50 years ago and was the principal advocate for the construction of the new addition to the Emerson School and its dedication. Mr. Newcomb later documented the history of the school and was active in the effort to prevent its closing. Mr. Newcomb fought to prevent the demolition of the Upper Falls depot. He worked to have it and the surrounding neighborhood, Pette Square, restored. He was an advocate for the establishment of the Upper Falls Historic District. He was a member of the Upper Falls advisory committee, former president of the Upper Falls Improvement Association, was a founding board member of the Newton Upper Falls Community Development Corp. and a member of the Upper Falls Historic District study commission. Mr. Newcomb received a historic preservation award from the Massachusetts Historic Commission in 1980, received the Unsung Hero Award from the city of Newton, an appreciation award from the city of Newton and was recognized by the Massachusetts House of Representatives for his outstanding contribution for his documentation of the city of Newton and preservation of Newton's landmarks. He was a longtime trustee for the First United Methodist Church of Newton. Husband of the late Martha (Royles) and Eva (Blois), Mr. Newcomb is survived by his son, Robert B. of Auburn; two brothers, William D. of Needham and Albert L. of Norwood; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held today at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Newton. Burial will be in Newton Cemetery, Newton. Arrangements by Eaton Funeral Home, Needham.
