  • Obituary: Edwin "Ed" C. Wieland, 77, Redwood Falls, Minn., formerly Jamestown, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at the Sunwood Good Samaritan Care Center in Redwood Falls. Mr. Wieland was born March 18, 1925, in Streeter, N.D., the son of Emil and Mathilda (Schlenker) Wieland. He grew up in Jamestown and graduated from Jamestown High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He received his wings in September 1944 and was a pilot in the 10th Air Force. He served in China-Burma-India where he was also director of air transportation for North China. He retired as a major from the active Air Force Reserve in 1967 and from the inactive Air Force Reserve in 1983. He married Joan Morrissey. They lived in Jamestown after the war, where he was company pilot for North Dakota Farmers Union. In addition, in 1952, he became executive secretary and assistant to the president of NDFU, and in 1957 was named secretary-treasurer by the board of directors. In 1967 he resigned from NDFU. They moved to Redwood Falls, where he was director of research and development for Farmers Union Marketing and Processing. In 1978, he was named general manager, and from 1981 until he retired in 1987, he was president and chief executive officer. He served six years on the board of directors of the International Renderers Association, including two years as chairman. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Lions Club, and treasurer of the former Redbird Flying Club. He was past director of the Community School Council and the Chamber of Commerce, a former member and officer of United Way and served on the board of directors of Minnesota Valley Bank. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Jan (Larry) Weight, Anoka, Minn., and Mary Ellen (Todd) Stedtfeld, River Falls, Wis.; two sons, Steven, Byron, Minn., and Michael, Boulder Creek, Calif.; two brothers, Art (Dorothy), Fargo, N.D., and Emil (Vye), Jamestown; a sister-in-law, Karen Morrissey, Mounds View, Minn.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ann Cave; a brother, Len; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Margaret and Aaron Burns. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Redwood Falls. Military honors by the Redwood Falls VFW, American Legion, National Guard and Sons of the American Legion units.
