  • Obituary: Donna Jean Upham Berg, age 81, of Grafton, ND passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. Donna was born February 13, 1927, in Grafton, ND to the late Clinton and Helena (Fischer) Upham. She attended Grafton High School. She continued her education at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. Upon graduation from Concordia in 1949, she took her first job as a teacher in Michigan, ND. There she met another teacher, Ole Berg. They married and spent the next 50 years together. Donna and Ole raised their four children in a home of love and great humor. There was never a lack of intellectual conversation and debate in the Berg household. She had a passion for reading, music and gardening. On most days, she could be found reading a book with the radio on or, in the spring and summer, planting and caring for her beautiful gardens. She loved bird watching and animals and travel. Donna often served as an election judge and volunteered for the American Cancer Society. She also taught English as a second language. For many years she made crafts for the sale at the Lutheran Sunset Nursing Home, helped with the fall dinner at Park River Bible Camp, and volunteered at the public library. She was very active in her church, participating in her women's circle, singing in the Senior Choir, teaching Confirmation and Sunday School, and serving as president of the GLCW. Survivors include her four children, Alison Grey of Minneapolis, Mark (Julie) Berg of Detroit Lakes, MN, Lisa Berg of Minneapolis, and David Berg of Chicago; her brother James (Virginia) Upham of Hot Springs, AR; two sisters, Charlotte Patterson of Chandler, AZ and Margaret (James) McClure of Bountiful, UT; and four grandchildren, Sarah, Tyler, Caitlin and Jonah. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ole, her parents, and brothers Charles and Clinton. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 26, 2008 at 10:30 AM at Grafton Lutheran Church, Grafton, ND. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home, Grafton, ND and Thursday for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Grafton Lutheran Cemetery, Grafton, ND.
