Bruce was born on April 5, 1939, in Oakland, California, to the late Milton D. McLellan and Alice J. (McDonald) McLellan. He lived in Eureka, California, until graduating from high school, and then moved to Sunnyvale, California, where he joined the Army. Bruce attained the rank of Master Sergeant in the United States Army and served for 30 years, completing a combat tour in Vietnam. He was also stationed in Germany, where he met the love of his life, Renate, his wife of 56 years. Bruce is survived by his wife, Renate; his son, Ronald and wife Karen of Mesa, Arizona; four brothers: Don, Jim (Beverly), John (Holly), and Mike (Tawny); and many relatives in Germany.
