Born in Derry, NH and raised in Revere, MA, Dr. Streeten, spent the bulk of her professional life in Syracuse, NY from 1960-2009, following which she lived in Corning, NY. She resided in Maryland for one month before her death. After graduating at age 16 as valedictorian of Revere High School, she received a BA at 20 (1945) from Tufts University and an MD in 1950 from Tufts University Medical School. Her training included residencies in Pathology (Boston City Hospital) and Ophthalmology (Wayne County Hospital and University of Michigan), and a fellowship in Ophthalmic Pathology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. She was on the Ophthalmology faculty at the University of Michigan from 1956-60. After moving with her husband, Dr. David H.P. Streeten, to Syracuse in 1960, she spent four years as a full-time mother to their three small children. She joined the Ophthalmology faculty at Upstate Medical University in 1964, where she was director of the Eye Pathology Laboratory from 1967-2008, retiring at the age of 83. After receiving her first NIH grant at the age of 50, for research on the structure of the ocular zonule, she was continuously funded for 27 years, through 2002. She authored more than 118 journal articles and book chapters and made important contributions in the areas of pseudoexfoliative disease of the lens, the protein composition of the zonule, and ocular findings in many genetic disorders. She was predeceased by her cherished husband of 48 years, Dr. David H.P. Streeten, an endocrinologist and faculty member of Upstate Medical University for 50 years, who shared her passion for research, travel and family. By example, they taught their children and grandchildren the importance of finding their career passions and maintaining family closeness. She is survived by two sons, a daughter and their spouses, Robert D. (Suzanne) Streeten of Corning, NY, John P. (Helen) Streeten of Vienna, VA, and Dr. Elizabeth A. Streeten (Craig Turkington) of Baltimore, MD and seven grandchildren, David J. Streeten, Duncan P. Streeten, David S. Thomas, Anne S. Thomas, Margaret P. Streeten, Kathryn C. Streeten and Douglas M. Streeten and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours for friends and family will be on Friday Feb. 13., 4 to 7 p.m. at Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel, 3690 Erie Blvd. E., DeWitt. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, 220 East Fayette St, Syracuse, NY, followed by interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Comstock Ave., Syracuse.
