Notes

  • Obituary: On Friday, 16th inst., at Pine Grove, Middleton, Wm. H. Chesley entered into rest, surrounded by his devoted daughters, Mrs. (Capt.) Wm. E. Johnson, Mrs. C.N. Phillips, Mrs. C.H. Phinney, Mrs. C.H. Lowell and Miss Lottie Chesley, who have the heartfelt sympathy of all in their overwhelming sorrow. Only five weeks since the beloved wife and mother was suddenly called "up higher," and now the heart-broken husband and father has joined her whom his soul loved. "Lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death not divided." Wm. H. Chesley, the only son of the late Samuel and Rachel Durling Chesley, was born at Pine Grove, Middleton, in 1827. Faithful and devoted as a son, a husband and a father, he was equally so in every relation of life '96 just and charitable in all his dealings. Of a large family only two sisters survive him, Mrs. Joseph Palmer of Spa Springs, and Mrs. John Robinson of Nictaux. One sister, Mrs. Eliza Vroom, predeceased him only a few weeks. While he and his noble-hearted wife rest from their labors, the lives they have blessed and the good they have done will live on, and God the Lord shall say "Well done, good and faithful, enter into the joy of the Lord." Mr. Chesley was eighth in the line from Philip Chesley, the immigrant ancestor who came from near Dover, England, and was one of the founders of Dover, New Hampshire, in 1642. Benjamin Chesley, the grandfather, followed an older brother, Samuel, from New Hampshire to Nova Scotia, about 1761 or 1762, and they were the pioneers of successful orchard planting in Eastern Annapolis.
