  • Obituary: Douglas Keith Whelpley August 23, 1948 '96 September 16, 2018 It is with deep sadness that the family of Doug announces his unexpected passing at home on September 16, 2018. He was the son of the late Harold and Margaret (Ayer) Whelpley. Born in Saint John, Doug spent most of his years growing up in St. Martins and graduated from the St. Martins School. He served his apprenticeship at Saint John Shipbuilding Ltd. to become a pipefitter. He continued his trade and became a very proud member and supporter of UA Local 213 Steamfitters, Plumbers, Pipefitters and Welders. Doug enjoyed his work and fellowship with Union Brothers and Sisters from various unions, on many construction sites, between New Brunswick and Alberta. Doug was a great friend to those who knew him and many that never met him. He was always there to lend a hand where ever needed. Doug enjoyed working with the youth coaching various sports and other activities in Grand Bay. He loved sports and played hockey on different teams in Saint John and Baseball, ending playing old timer's softball for the Grand Bay Home Hardware "Kings". He enjoyed shooting pool in the Westfield Golf and Country Pool League. He had a passion for Nascar and enjoyed watching the races with friends. Doug's greatest love in life was the time he spent with his wife Ruth, his daughters, grandsons and great granddaughter. They were his pride, joy and meaning for Life. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Brothers, Harold and Walter, son-in-law, Bryan DeLucry, nephew, Michael and brother-in-law, Al Blackburn. Survived by his wife Ruth (Steen, Montford), daughters, Kelly (DeLucry), Kandace (Tony) Palmer, grandsons, Devin and Matthew, great granddaughter, Kaitlyn, his Sister, Pegi Blackburn (Halifax) and several nephews and nieces. Resting at Brenan's Bay View Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road, Saint John, NB (634-7425) with visiting on Wednesday September 19, 2018 from 6-8 pm and Thursday September 20, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. A funeral service will be celebrated on Friday September 21, 2018 from Brenan's Bay View Chapel at 11:00 am Interment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in Doug's memory can be made to Bobby Hospice, Joshua Group or charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences may be placed at www.brenansfh.com.
