  • Obituary: John T. Earll, aged 78, police magistrate-elect for Great Falls, died suddenly from heart disease at 10:20 o'clock Sunday night at his home, 1223 Third avenue north. Judge Earll was in the bathroom and had just started to take a drink of water when members of his family saw he was collapsing and rushed to keep him from falling. He died almost immediately. Judge Earll had been in good health until last Tuesday, having carried on his work as justice in the Great Falls courts regularly as well as conducting his campaign for police magistrate on the Democratic ticket. Tuesday he complained of feeling ill and had been confined to his home since. On Sunday morning, however, he showed signs of improvement, having had the first night of rest on Saturday night since he fell ill and his family had believed he would be all right soon. Judge Earll was born in Syracuse, New York, in September 1843. He lived in New York state through his youth and early manhood, enlisting in a New York regiment early in the Civil war and serving throughout the conflict. He came to Montana from Utah 39 years ago and lived for ten years in Anaconda before coming to Great Falls. At Anaconda he was employed in the Washoe smelters and followed the same line of work in this city for a long time. He was the first elected magistrate of the Great Falls police court in 1904 and served until 1906 and from 1914 to 1921 he was justice of peace in Great Falls. In the Republican landslide of last fall he was defeated by less than 60 votes for re-election. He received the largest plurality given any candidate in the last city election when he was elected police magistrate by 2235 votes. Judge Earll is survived by his widow, Margaret Earll, living at the family home here, and three sons, W.H. Earll of Great Falls, John T. Earll, Jr., Gary, Ind., and David Earll of Syracuse, N.Y. A sister, Mrs. Fannie Hicks, lives in New York City. All absent relatives have been notified. The Great Falls Tribune Great Falls,MT 11 April 1921
