  • Obituary: CANFIELD, Donald George "Don" - 72, Oak Ridge Court, Pictou, passed away November 23, 2005, after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Born in Wallace, he was a son of the late Clifford and Laura (Chambers) Canfield. A strong athlete, he was a well-known basketball player in Pictou during the 50s. Don began work at the local Stedman's Department Store, and went on to enjoy a 35 year career with Stedman's, in management, and eventually owning stores in Chipman, N.B., and Wolfville. A lover of all sports, he was an avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays. Known for his kindness, Don was also an animal lover, and greatly enjoyed his dogs. He was a member of the Rotary Club, and the Eastern Star I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 1, Pictou. Surviving are his loving and devoted daughters, Janet (Frank), Toronto, Ont.; Lori, Pictou; special friend, Marjie Rafuse, Stellarton; nephew, Don, Pictou; first wife, Gail (Clyde) Westhaver, London, Ont.; nieces and nephews in Ontario. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Basil. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Friday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in Pictou United Church with Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity officiating. Burial will be in Seaview Cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations in his memory may be made to the ALS Society of Nova Scotia, 3433 Dutch Village Rd., Halifax, NS B3N 2S7. The family would like to extend special thanks to the V.O.N. Nurses, the palliative care team and the ALS Society of Nova Scotia.
