  • Obituary: Falmouth Enterprise October 3, 2003 Jean T. (Field) Mayo of Lawrenceville, Georgia, a former Falmouth resident, died Tuesday in Lawrenceville after a brief illness. She was 75. Born in Taunton, she was the daughter of Harold E. and Bertha H. (Moore) Field. She attended Taunton High School and was graduated from Bridgewater State Teacher's College. Her former husband, Richard P. Mayo, died in 1977. Married in 1948, she moved to Falmouth in 1952. Mrs. Mayo was the owner and assistant manager of the North Falmouth Apothecary for 20 years. She was also the owner and operator of the former Mayo's Country Farm Stand for several years. Active in local politics and the Republican party, she was also a supporter of environmental causes. She was a Falmouth town meeting member for 14 years, a Precinct Five director for nine years and served on the Falmouth Personnel Board for six years. Ms. Mayo served on several Falmouth town committees and was an alternate member of the South Cape Beach Advisory Committee. She was an elected member of the Falmouth Republican Town Committee for 14 years and its vice chairman for four years. She was a past director of the Falmouth Outlook Club, past president of the Falmouth Junior Women's Club and of the Falmouth Business and Professional Women's Club. Ms. Mayo was also a former first district director and past state board member of the Junior Federation. She served as chairman of the Falmouth Housing Authority and was a former registrar of voters. She was also a member of the Mashpee Business Women's Club. She leaves six siblings, Dorothea A. Feaster and Virginia R. Hamilton, both of Lawrenceville, Georgia; Claire F. Meekle of South Attleboro, and William E. Field of Lawrenceville; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Mary V. Nelson, Kathleen E. Lawler, and Robert J. Field. Graveside services will be at noon on Friday, October 10, at the North Falmouth Cemetery, 155 Old Main Road in North Falmouth.
