Notes

  • Obituary: ARTHUR JOHN LINDSAY - 81, Brookfield, passed away March 30, 2009, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII of complications following heart bypass surgery. Born in Brookfield, he was the eldest son of the late John and Orpha (Bates) Lindsay. He attended school in Brookfield and Truro, and received his B.Sc. and B.Ed. from Mount Allison University. He was a lifelong educator, teaching in Halifax and Truro, and holding principalships in Lantz, Salmon River, Berwick, Tatamagouche, and Masstown. He moved his family to Wolfville in 1971 to earn his Masters in Education at Acadia University, and took a trip to the former USSR to observe education practices there. Following this, he moved back to Brookfield and became a consultant in Special Education for the Colchester East Hants School Board, a position he enjoyed very much until his retirement in 1985. Art remained physically active until his final hospitalization, and intellectually sharp until the end. He was involved in many areas of community and church life. In his retirement he was a school board member, United Church Presbytery chair, member of the Brookfield Men's Club, winner of the 1983 Eagle Award for Community Service, and served on countless committees. Although his teaching subjects were physics and math, he had a gift for language, and wrote books and plays on local history, and gave a popular 'Historical Walk' through the Village of Brookfield during its annual Coming Home to Brookfield activities. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Roberta Byers, and by daughters, Marian, St. Margaret's Bay; Donna (Peter) Hogan, Wellington; Janet, Brookfield; granddaughters, Kelly Hogan, Halifax; Laurel Hogan, Ottawa; brothers, Warren (Anne), Truro; Robert (Dorothy), Dartmouth; sister, Marian (Ernie) Parker, Truro; many nieces and nephews. He was a witty and thoughtful man, full of integrity and kindness, and will be greatly missed. Cremation has taken place. Funeral will be held Saturday, April 4 at 2 pm in Knox United Church, Brookfield, Rev. Larry Harrison officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Family flowers only. If desired, donations may be made to Knox United Church, Colchester Historical Society, or to an educational project or charity of choice.
