Parents: Ernest Wilson and Bessie Colburn Miles. Staff Sergeant Lewis Arthur Miles had his education in the Amherst [NH] schools, graduating from the Amherst High School in 1940. At the time of his induction into the Army, on January 6, 1943, he was employed as a service station operator. Lewis was sworn into the service at Fort Devens, and was sent to Camp Stewart, Georgia, where he was a member of a coast artillery unit. He was soon advanced to staff sergeant. In July, 1943, while stationed at Camp Stewart, he was accidentally killed. His remains were sent to Amherst and a military funeral was held for him. In tribute to a comrade who died while a member of his country's armed services, an honor guard and firing squad from Grenier Field, Manchester, New Hampshire, conducted military rites. He is buried in the family lot at Meadowview cemetery in Amherst.
