  • Obituary: LEWIS ARTHUR MILES Born July 9, 1922 in Everett, Massachusetts. Parents: Ernest Wilson and Bessie Colburn Miles. Staff Sergeant Lewis Arthur Miles had his education in the Amherst [NH] schools, graduating from the Amherst High School in 1940. At the time of his induction into the Army, on January 6, 1943, he was employed as a service station operator. Lewis was sworn into the service at Fort Devens, and was sent to Camp Stewart, Georgia, where he was a member of a coast artillery unit. He was soon advanced to staff sergeant. In July, 1943, while stationed at Camp Stewart, he was accidentally killed. His remains were sent to Amherst and a military funeral was held for him. In tribute to a comrade who died while a member of his country's armed services, an honor guard and firing squad from Grenier Field, Manchester, New Hampshire, conducted military rites.
