Notes

  • Obituary: Amos B. Makinen, 32, husband of Francesca Baudanza Makinen, died unexpectedly Saturday at his home. He was born in Rockland, a son of Douglas A. Makinen and Sidney B. Richardson. As an infant he lived a brief time in South Thomaston until moving with his parents to Orono, where they lived for two years. He returned to this area with his family and attended local schools, graduating from Rockland District High School in 1984. A high-line lobsterman, he fished out of Owls Head aboard his boat, Sea Ryder. He was a member of the Owls Head Harbor Committee and an elected member of the Maine Fisheries Committee. In past years, he played Men's League Softball, enjoyed golfing and was a past member of the Rockland Golf Club. Mr. Makinen's family noted how proud he was of his heritage as a grandson of the South Thomaston boat builder Amos Makinen. They also remembered his quick sense of humor, fervent quest for knowledge and appreciation of his fellow man. Surviving are his wife of Owls Head; his mother of Rockland; a daughter, Mikaela L. Makinen of Owls Head; a brother, Paul D. of Washington, D.C.: a sister, Marcella Makinen of Portland; and maternal grandparents, Geoffrey and Virginia Torney of Owls Head and Elmer S. Bird of Florida. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Burpee-Strong Funeral Home, Rockland. A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Thomaston Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Village Cemetery, South Thomaston.
