  • Obituary: Raymond W. Thompson HYANNIS - Raymond W. Thompson, of Somerville and Cape Cod, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, surrounded by loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Muriel Pelton for 64 years, and a devoted and proud father to his children: son Daniel and his wife Virginia of Hyannis; and daughters, Dianne Simpson and her husband Robert of Yarmouth, Nancy Cassell and her husband Ronald of Falmouth, Bonnie Lambert and her husband Richard of North Andover, and Lynne Thompson and her late husband Gary Jacobs of Somerville. Married at the Union Square Baptist Church in 1943, Ray and Muriel lived in Somerville for more than 60 years, where he tended to his gardens and workshop. Ray was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy and Merchant Marines from 1942-1946 as a Gunner's Ammunition Assistant, cook and baker. He received the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and American Area War Zone Bar, and World War II Victory Medal. He served on various Liberty and Coast Guard ships and made numerous overseas voyages, including the June 6, 1944, Normandy Invasion mission. He worked in several fields while raising his family, and retired from the MIT Transportation Division. Ray was brother of the late Mildred Mohaupt, Helen Rivera, Dorothy Cabral, Gertrude Clark, Fred and Warren Thompson. He is survived by sisters-in-law Kathleen Thompson (wife of Warren) of Manchester, N.H., and Gladys Benoit of Hollis, N.H. He was a loving grandfather to 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two late grandsons. Visiting hours will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Feb. 9, at George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway (Powder House Square), Somerville. A memorial service at noon will be followed by burial at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett with a Navy honor guard. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Raymond's name may be made to The ALS Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 320 Norwood Place, South 2nd Floor, Norwood, MA 02062.
