  • Obituary: Murray Mugford was born in Chelsea, MA., on September 1, 1928, to Leander and Emmie (Tucker) Mugford. He was a graduate of the Chelsea High School class of 1946. Following graduation he worked at S.A.M. Company in Chelsea before graduating from the Boston School of Mechanical Dentistry, then continuing his education at Northeastern University and New York University. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he served as a dental technician and was honorably discharged in January of 1953. Following his discharge, he remained in the Army Reserves through 1957. Murray had taught at Tufts University. He later owned and operated the Mugford Orthodontic Lab in Reading for many years. He and his wife lived in Stoneham and Reading before moving to Gloucester in 1976. While residing in Gloucester, he was a United States Postal Carrier on Saturdays.He owned a cabin cruiser, the Blue Fin, which was moored in the Annisquam River. He was a former member and commander of the Flotilla 4-6 Coast Guard Auxiliary, and was also a member of the National Rifle Association. A longtime active member of the First Baptist Church, Murray was named Deacon Emeritus in 2002. Following an extended illness, Murray Mugford died Friday morning, November 2, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his wife of sixty years, Gwynivere I. (Geldart) Mugford, and his seven children, He was survived by his wife, 7 children, fourteen grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. The family suggested memorial donations be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.
