Notes

  • Military Service: US Marine Corp
  • Occupation: University Professor Economics
  • Obituary: He was the son of Norm and Ann Crapo. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in Jackson, and remained very close to many of his classmates throughout his life. After serving two years in the Marines, Chuck attended Michigan State University where he earned a B.A., Master's, and Ph.D. in economics. His academic career included appointments at Michigan State, the University of Maine, Penn State, Cornell, and the George Meany Center for Labor Studies; but Chuck's longest association was with Notre Dame University where he taught for nearly twenty years, where he served as the chair of the Economics Department for nearly ten years, and where he helped to found the Higgins Labor Studies Program. Throughout his life, Chuck was professionally and personally committed to helping working people win better treatment and better wages. Academically, this interest took the form of studying the impact of industrial structure on the bargaining power of workers. His research projects, such as a study of the working poor and a study of Walmart workers, examined the impact of industrial organization on the lives of ordinary people. Chuck is survived by his wife of fifty years, Mary, one son and two daughters.
