  • Obituary: Judith Ann McLendon Jernigan-Phinney, 67, born Sept. 9, 1944, passed into God's loving embrace on Nov. 13, 2011 in her home in Orange Springs surrounded by her loving family after fighting a courageous battle with cancer for more than 11 years. She was a Putnam County native and grew up in Keuka. She was a semi-pro softball player, avid pool shooter, and a pro bowler. She enjoyed going to the Gator games with her husband, Norman Phinney. The thing that she lived for most was her children and all of her grandchildren. To know her was to love her, and she will be missed by all. Preceding her in death were her mother, Vera Jernigan Reeves; her father, E.J. McClendon; her late husband, Robert Gene Rice; her Granny Clara May Jernigan and Papa Will Jernigan; her uncle, Victor Jeremy, her sister, Lajune Danlovich, and her granddaughter, Audra Ann Phinney. She is survived by her loving husband of 30 years, James Norman Phinney of Orange Springs; daughter, Elissa Rice of Iowa; son, Greg Rice of Palatka; son, Richard Rice (Deb) of Ohio; son, Jimmy Phinney of Orange Springs; son, David Phinney (Pat) of California; daughter, Terri Rice-Sheppard of Orange Springs; daughter, Cynthia Rice Arnold (Billy) of Palatka; daughter, Candace Phinney Bohannon (Billy) of Hollister; 14 grandchildren, Merisa Rice, Angela Bowen, Chelsea Sheppard, Tara Bell, Christina Phinney, Emily Rice, Jeremy Bell, twins Joshua and Joseph Bilyou, Brian Phinney, Garrett Rice, Cameron Rice, Nathan Bohannon and Lauren Bohannon; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Francis Smith (Kess) of Hawthorne; cousins, Bonnie, Betty, Barbara, and Bill Jernigan, and cousin David Stanley King (Shirley). Last but not least, Jim and Audrey Phinney of Palatka, her parents-in-law, but always to Judy was Mother and Dad. Calling hours will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18 at Masters Funeral Home in Palatka. In honor and celebration of Judy's life, a video tribute will be shown. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 at the St. Marks Episcopal Church with the Rev. James M. Dorn officiating. Burial will follow at Palatka Memorial Gardens.
