  • Obituary: New Hampshire Sunday News BARRINGTON - Barbara L. (Gould) Carpenter, 80, formerly of Saugus, Mass., died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at the Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester. She was the wife of the late Shirley Edgar "Bill" Carpenter who passed away in 1998. They were married for more than 50 years. Born and raised in Saugus, she was the daughter of Ray and Sarah (Jenkins) Gould. She was a 1941 graduate of Saugus High School. She was a secretary in the school department for the town of Saugus prior to her retirement. She enjoyed traveling with her family between homes in Apopka, Fla., and Limerick, Maine. She was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Saugus and active with the Women's Guild at the church. Later in her life while attending Church of the Redeemer in Rochester, N.H. and most recently St. Michael's, she spent time sending cards and good wishes to fellow church members who were ill. She spent many dedicated years involved with the Saugus Chapter 33 Order of Rainbow for Girls and was a Mother Advisor; she was a longtime member of the Tontaguon Chapter of Eastern Star in Saugus. She was an active member of the Barrington Women's Club and the Frisbie Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary. She had resided in Barrington with her daughter for the past 18 years. She leaves two daughters, Susan Booth and her husband, John, of Barrington, Shirley Carpenter-Castonguay and her husband, Roland, of East Lebanon, Maine; grandchildren, Andrew Wood, Paula Court, David Wood, Stacie Ryder; one great-grandson, Justin Wood; two sisters, Helen Smith of Saugus and Ruthanne Allen and her husband, Rev. David Allen, of Barnstable; she also leaves her cherished friend and companion, Sydney; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Virginia Jefska. Funeral services will be held in the Bisbee-Porcella Funeral Home, 549 Lincoln Ave., Saugus, Mass., on Saturday at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours will be prior to the service on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Saugus. Donations in her memory may be made to Ever After Mustang Rescue, 501c3, 463 West St., Biddeford, ME 04005. There will be a memorial service at a later date in Barrington, N.H.
