Church Jr. of Arlington Heights A Mass for Herbert S. Church Jr., 86, will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, at Our Lady of the Wayside Church, 432 S. Mitchell St., Arlington Heights. Interment will be in St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, Palatine. Born July 24, 1920, in Framingham, Mass., he died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007, at home. Mr. Church was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy. He was the vice president and general manager of Turner Construction's Chicago territory. He started with the company in 1943, when he graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in civil engineering. He retired in 1985. He had served in a wide range of positions with the company including field positions, construction project manager and general superintendent. In the Chicago territory, he was active in the construction industry's sponsorship of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. He received the Good Scout Award in 1971, in recognition of his scouting activities. He was also a member of the Union League of Chicago, the Economic Club of Chicago and the Inverness Club of Palatine. He was instrumental in the remodeling of the Horizon Children's Center in 1997. He was director of the Builders Association of Chicago. He was the husband of Carol S. (nee Orzech); father of Carolyn (John) Fahey, David (Chary), Kathryn (the late James) Jur, Virginia (Thomas O'Mara) Church and Trish (Vernon Podlasek II) Church-Podlasek; grandfather of 15; great-grandfather of seven; and brother of Marion Nielsen and the late Barbara (Frank) Strange.
