She was born Sept. 28, 1924, in Ayer, Mass, the daughter of Howard A. Kimball and Elizabeth Chandler Kimball. She was raised and educated in New England and maintained a deep appreciation of her New England heritage. The Kimball family was known throughout New England for purebred Holstein cattle. She loved to share memories of riding her pony on the dairy farm where she was raised, and of her enjoyment of family and friends. In high school, she was the Apple Blossom Queen for Littleton, Mass. During World War II, she worked at the Radiation Laboratory for M.I.T. in their photo lab. It was there she met her future husband, Clarence "Bud" Sorvaag. They married Dec. 4, 1945, in Oakland, Calif. She worked at Point Magu U.S. Naval Air Missile Test Center before becoming a full time homemaker. The Sorvaags raised three children. Mrs. Sorvaag was a wonderful, devoted wife of 63 years who was always supportive and encouraging to her husband, children and grandchildren, her family said. Before moving to Brookings in 1972, she and her husband raised their family in Los Altos, Calif., and Bozeman, Mont. Enjoying the great outdoors, they took numerous camping and fishing trips, and later the couple traveled to Florida, Mexico, Alaska, Maine and Hawaii. She was always ready for an adventure. Mrs. Sorvaag was deeply religious and, even when she had lost much of her memory, she always could recite her favorite Bible verse from Jeremiah 29:11. She had a cheerful, positive attitude that always delighted and encouraged others around her.
