  • Obituary: Marion Elizabeth Gallant, our beloved mother, passed peacefully from this world on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at the age of 88 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Marion was born March 14, 1923 in Massachusetts to William and Maude Gates. She grew up with her brother, Billy and sister, Marge in Chelsea, Mass. She graduated from Salem Teacher's College after which she began her career as a teacher. She was married to Joseph Edgar Gallant of Boston Mass. in 1947. As Dad's career progressed Marion and our family moved from Boston Mass., to Evansville Indiana, Duluth Minn., Houston Texas, Cobham in county of Surrey, England, Milan Italy, Darien Conn, The Hague Holland, London England, and Dusseldorf Germany until the family settled in Houston, Texas in 1975. Mom became dear friends with the other ladies in the neighborhood. Mom's greatest love was her Catholic faith, her family, teaching, opera and art were her passions. Opera led her to be a docent with the Houston Grand Opera where she presented out-reach programs to area schools for many years. Later she earned a certificate to teach English as a second language and as this new career evolved she began specializing in working with households native to Japan. In doing so, Mom met many more lasting friends. She very much enjoyed giving help and kindness to those living in a foreign land, just as she had received many years before. Mom was also active in our church, St. John Vianney. She joined the ministry that visited the sick and gave aid to the poor. After Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 1999 her health began to decline. She relied more and more on us to help her with her everyday needs at her home in Houston, including respite trips to Baton Rouge, LA. Eventually Mom's deteriorating health led to being a Baton Rouge resident. Her stay ended only now as we bring Mom home for her final rest. Marion is survived by her loving daughter, Priscilla E. Gallant of Houston, Texas and by her loving son, Robert P. Gallant and wife Ann E. Haskell Gallant, grandsons; Michael and Matthew of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and her sister, Marjorie Gates Saliewicz of Largo, Florida. Marion was predeceased by her loving husband, Joseph E. Gallant in 1982 and her brother, William Gates. A Funeral Mass will be held on August 2, 2011 at 10:30 am in the chapel of St. John Vianney, with Reverend Troy Gately officiating. Immediately following, a graveside service will be held at Memorial Oaks Cemetery where Mom will be reunited with Dad. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer's Association , www.alz.org. We owe a debt of gratitude to Mom's care giver and companion, Brenda Lewis of Maringouin, Louisiana.
