  • Obituary: Joseph C. Desmond, 77, of Vernon, passed from the loving hands of his family in to the arms of the Lord on Friday, (January 16, 2004) at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA. Born December 13, 1926 in Weymouth, MA, the son of the late Walter and Mary (Lyons) Desmond. Joseph has been the devoted husband of Constance (Fitzgerald) Desmond for 48 years. At the age of 17, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1944 to 1946 as an Aviation Radioman and in the Naval Reserve from 1946 to 1954. He attended Boston University, receiving an Associate in Arts degree in 1949, graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science Education degree. For 27 years Joe was an investigator with the U.S. Civil Service Commission until his retirement in 1983. Prior to that, he drove taxi, taught History and worked for Pan American Airways. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Christopher and his girlfriend, Jeanine ''Freddie'', Peter and his sweetheart, Darcy and Neil and his friend, Gaye Cassells, all of Vernon. He leaves two daughters, Eileen Berry and her husband, Dean of Enfield and Sara Zitka and her husband, Dean of Ellington. He is predeceased by his beloved daughter, Jeanne and by his sister, Nancy of Anchorage, AK. He also leaves 14 grandchildren, Shannon, Leah, Emily, Brandon, Sean, Tyler, Adrianna, Julia, Christine, Michael, Alissa, Kyle, Spencer and William; a niece, Mary; and three nephews, Joseph, Edward and Michael; as well as several cousins and many dear friends. He will be fondly remembered by all. Friends may gather on Thursday, Jan. 22, at St. Luke's Church, Ellington for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Ellington Center Cemetery. Friends may call at the Burke-Fortin Funeral Home, 76 Prospect St., Rockville on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Rockville General Hospital Hospice Unit, 31 Union St., Rockville, CT 06066.
